Kondanna was awakened during the Buddha’s first turning of the Dharma Wheel. It was the words “Whatever is subject to arising is also subject to cessation” that wiped the dust from his eyes. Ananda, even though he was with the Buddha for many years, had to wait until after the Buddha’s passing away.
The Zen tradition records many sudden awakenings, both from the disant past and more in more recent times. Even so, I’m sure that for most who have such experiences, they have many years of practice as a foundation. Anyway, Master Dogen said that practice and awakening cannot be two.
